The Johnson Academy Marks 20 Years With a Mission to Reach Southern California Families Searching for a Different Educational Option

Specialized Orange County school serves bright, capable students with dyslexia and language-based learning differences who may struggle in traditional classrooms

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif., October 9, 2026 — Across Southern California, there are bright, capable children who work incredibly hard yet continue to struggle in traditional classrooms. Their parents may spend years searching for answers trying tutoring, interventions, school meetings and different approaches without realizing that a specialized educational option designed for how their child learns may exist right here in Orange County.

The Johnson Academy wants more families to know they have options.

As the specialized South Orange County private school celebrates its 20th anniversary during the 2026–2027 school year, the milestone is about more than looking back at two decades of educating students with learning differences. It is an opportunity to reach families who may be searching for the right educational environment for their child today.

The Johnson Academy serves students in grades K–8 with dyslexia, language-based learning disabilities and related learning differences. The school combines highly individualized academics, very small classes and intensive evidence-based intervention in a supportive environment designed around how each individual child learns.

Rather than expecting students to fit one educational model, The Johnson Academy begins by understanding the child identifying strengths, areas of need and the instructional approaches that can help that student make meaningful progress.

A cornerstone of the school's program is Evidence-Based Intervention (EBI). Students receive approximately 50 minutes of EBI each school day, typically in a one-to-one setting, in addition to their academic instruction.

Classes are generally limited to approximately five or six students, allowing teachers and intervention specialists to understand their students at a level that can be difficult to achieve in a larger, traditional classroom.

But for many students and families, finding the right school environment can affect much more than academics.

A child who has struggled despite working hard can begin to believe that they simply aren't good at school. Repeated frustration can affect confidence, motivation and the way a child views their own abilities.

In an environment designed to understand how they learn, students have an opportunity to experience something different: progress, success and a renewed sense of confidence.

The goal isn't simply to help a child get through school. It is to help that child become a confident and capable learner.

The Johnson Academy was founded by Cathy Johnson, whose commitment to children with learning differences grew from the belief that students can thrive when they receive instruction designed around their individual learning needs. Today, Johnson continues to work closely with students and families through assessment and testing, helping identify learning needs and providing families with a clearer understanding of how their child learns.

The school is led by Director Michelle McDuffie, who oversees The Johnson Academy's day-to-day operations and works closely with students, families, teachers and staff. McDuffie's leadership helps ensure that the individualized philosophy on which the school was founded remains at the center of each student's educational experience.

Together, their perspectives reflect an important part of The Johnson Academy's approach: understand why a child is struggling, understand how that child learns, and create an educational environment where that child has the opportunity to succeed.

Twenty years later, that philosophy remains at the heart of The Johnson Academy.

For the school, the 20th anniversary represents both a celebration of the students, families and educators who have been part of its first two decades and an opportunity to look forward.

The school's goal for its 20th year is simple: help more Southern California families discover that when a bright, capable child is struggling in school, there may be another option.
