The Johnson Academy staff receives top-quality professional development which enables them to use proven and effective teaching methods in the subjects and grade levels they teach, so they can enhance and accelerate their students’ progress.

The Johnson Academy is a warm and friendly environment whose mission is to serve the children and parents of South Orange County by offering evidence-based interventions as a part of each students’ academic day. As part of our mission, we also build educators’ awareness of language-based learning disabilities such as dyslexia as well as offer suggestions to curriculum and classroom modifications.

Safe at School Reopening plan

The Johnson Academy will be back in session on Monday, August 31st for the 2020-21 school year.

The Johnson Academy has put in place Safe at School guidelines and expectations to ensure the safety of all students and employees as we navigate the public health guidelines put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As time progresses and guidelines are modified, the school will modify its Safe at School guidelines to meet the current recommendations.

  • We have communicated with The Johnson Academy families through surveys and email regarding our safe at school plans. The results of the survey showed 89% of the families prefer to return to school in person largely due to their child's need for Dyslexia remediation.
  • The Johnson Academy staff all agree that in-person instruction is more beneficial than virtual learning. Last spring when we moved to a distance learning format they all shared the difficulties the students had with accessing curriculum. They feel that the safe at school plan will allow for a positive learning environment while adhering to the CDC guidelines.
  • Staff and students practice physical distancing, when feasible, by remaining at least six feet away from others
  • Cohorts will have a maximum of 6 students per group for lunch. When possible, the same cohorts will be together for ELA and math class.
  • Designated areas outside for drop-off and pick-up with one-way access only
  • Staff and students wear face coverings (mask or shield) if unable to work within the six feet physical distancing guidelines. These students are exempt per the state guidelines regarding masks. Students with learning disabilities may use a face shield instead of a mask.
  • Staff and students wash their hands frequently for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer when hand washing is not available◦ 10 minutes between classes will provide this opportunity
  • Staff cleans and disinfects classroom or office hourly
  • Sanitizing stations providing surface-disinfecting products, hand sanitizer, and face coverings have been placed in hallways throughout the school
  • Students do not share toys or school supplies with other students
  • Students only use their personal work materials and return only their own materials to their personal pencil packs
  • Students keep water bottles, pencil packs, face coverings and outerwear with them as they go from class to class
  • Students participate in appropriate group activities and play while maintaining physical distancing
  • Students drop off lunches in specifically assigned bins/cubbies in their homerooms while maintaining physical distancing guidelines
  • Students only use the computer assigned to them, corresponding to their school number
  • Employee will also complete a daily self-check for symptoms, including a temperature reading within the first hour of arrival.
  • Anyone exhibiting these symptoms will immediately be removed from the classroom and sent home where they must remain for a minimum of 48 hours.
    • The student has a temperature of 100.4°F or higher
    • The student has an unusual presentation of cough, sore throat, or other respiratory symptoms
    • The student reports or presents with chills, muscle aches, loss of taste or smell
    • The student reports nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
    • The student has been exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the past 14 days
    • The student is positive for COVID-19
  • If multiple cases in multiple cohorts are found, or when at least 5% of the total number of teachers/students/staff are tested positive within a 14-day period, school closure may be appropriate
  • Communication for any school closures, COVID updates and adjustments in our Safe at School protocols will be sent via email directly to staff and parents
